Whitbread Brewery: Stainless Steel Sugar Tank Lining
Stainless Steel Bulk Sugar Storage
The Client
Some years ago several breweries in the UK had problems with the storage of bulk liquid sugar in certain grades of stainless steel tanks. In these cases, the sugar was causing the stainless steel to crystallise and eventually the tanks started to form cracks and the sugar leaked.
We had to consider the chemical content of the sugar, the operational temperatures and the fact that it was a food product. The fact that vessels made from stainless steel require very precise preparation also presented a tricky problem. The correct lining material was found and applied and as far as I am aware all the tanks that were lined during the mid 70’s are still in good working condition.
